What is a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE)?
Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs) are nursing professionals with specialized training in care of the sexual assault patient. SANEs offer and/or provide the following care to patients presenting after an acute assault or in response to a report of a history of sexual assault: patient-centered, trauma-informed care, education, and at the patient’s request and with his or her consent, evidence collection and sexually transmitted infection testing. SANEs are an important part of multidisciplinary teams and may work closely with medical advocacy and law enforcement. 51°µÍø has received past grant funding from both Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) resulting in enduring programs designed to support SANE training.
